Project: Brook Lane North, Brentford.

Description: Brook Lane North is located in Brentford, part of the London Borough of Hounslow, just south of the Great West Road. Following a period of decline form the 1970’s onwards, the area is now undergoing a process of rejuvenation. New developments have provided a rich mix of uses in a varied architectural context built around a new pattern of streets, squares and gardens, creating a dignified and pleasant urban realm. The proposals for Brook Lane North seek to build upon the progress made to date by extending the principles which have informed these developments (largely confined to the north east side of Brook Lane) to the south west side the street.

The scheme comprises a mixed-use proposal, incorporating a Health Club and commercial uses at ground floor level, with residential accommodation above. The form of the building is modulated in response to the specific context. An ‘podium’ at 2nd floor level fills the footprint of the site, and provides a shared, generously planted roof terrace which responds to the scale of the residential terraces to the south west. Above this, a 5-storey block on York Road responds to the increased scale of the development on the opposite side of the street, while an 8-storey block on Brook Lane North looks towards the large-scale development of Great North Quarter. A recessed ‘penthouse’ structure above the eight floor roof terrace provides a sculptural and articulate roofscape.
