Project: 64 Christian Fields, Norbury

Description: The project consists of a single storey extension to the rear of the house, as well as a full basement. The extension follows the existing ‘stepped’ profile of the rear elevation, echoing the line of the original elevation. The accommodation provides an extended, combined family kitchen and dining area overlooking the generous rear garden, with the possibility of separating this accommodation from the family rooms at the front of the house. In addition, the basement extension under the footprint of the ground floor of the house provides leisure space for the entire family. The basement is lit and ventilated through a lightwell at the front of the property, and a low level courtyard to the rear. The courtyard is ‘stepped’ to allow access to the rear garden from the basement rooms. The rear extension takes the form of a simple, single story structure designed to harmonise with the character, form and materiality of the existing building while remaining subservient to it and respecting the amenity of neighboring properties. The alterations are designed to echo the character of the ‘host’ property, and to complement the scale and materiality of the existing house.
