Project: St. Andrew’s RC Primary School, Streatham, London.

Description: The scheme provides a refurbished and extended school hall for St. Andrew’s Primary School in Streatham. The existing school hall was no longer fit for purpose, both inadequate in size to accommodate the whole school community, and compromised in its performance by inadequate heating, lighting, ventilation and acoustic control. The poor state of the building fabric was also addressed as part of the project. The new hall addresses each aspect of the brief, in the context of creating a flexible space which accommodates a variety of uses from daily dining, to community performances, to religious services. This flexibility is achieved through careful planning which re-orientated the hall, turning the main axis through 90 degrees, and incorporating ancillary spaces for the storage of equipment when not in use. The introduction of flexible partitions, openable overhead roof lights, glazed side walls, and dynamic lighting has transformed the character of the space, and multiplied the number of functions which the hall can comfortably accommodate.

Status: Complete.
