Project: Watergate Farm, Wadhurst, East Sussex.

Description: Watergate Farm is a new build replacement dwelling in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. The building represents a carefully considered scheme for a new home for the client’s family which satisfies the accommodation requirements of the brief, enhances the site of which it forms part and which relates sensitively both to the spaces which it immediately defines, and to the wider landscape beyond the site boundary. The new building endeavours to provide a high quality family home which reflects and extends the language of traditional architecture, in this beautiful part of the world, in a way which is relevant to contemporary patterns of living and land husbandry. The form, scale, massing and materiality of the new building adheres to a set of organisational, formal and spatial principles which transforms the constraints of the site into a proposition which fits seamlessly into its physical context, respecting the sensitivities of building in a context which is rich in many of the qualities of the English rural tradition.
